Root Canal

Treatment that relieves pain from an infected or inflamed tooth nerve and helps save the natural tooth.

## Root Canal Treatment A root canal treats infection or inflammation inside a tooth — often the cause of significant tooth pain. The goal is to relieve the pain and save the natural tooth, so you can keep using it for years to come. ### What to expect 1. We numb the tooth thoroughly before starting. 2. The inflamed or infected tissue inside the tooth is removed. 3. The inside of the tooth is cleaned, shaped, and sealed. 4. A crown or filling is placed to protect the tooth long-term. With modern techniques and anesthetic, most patients find the procedure feels similar to having a filling done.

Frequently asked questions

Is a root canal painful?
Most of the discomfort patients associate with a root canal actually comes from the infection itself. The procedure is done with local anesthetic and is typically comparable to having a filling placed. Mild soreness for a day or two afterward is normal.
How many visits does it take?
Many root canals can be completed in one or two visits, depending on the tooth and the extent of infection. We'll walk you through the plan up front.
Will I need a crown afterward?
Back teeth almost always need a crown after a root canal to protect them from fracture. For some front teeth, a filling may be enough. We'll recommend what's best for the specific tooth.
